Miami Florida vs. Tallahassee Florida Rivalry: The Annual Battle of the Sunshine State and why is so Great
The Miami-Tallahassee Rivalry in College Football is only about thirty years old or so, as far as how great an important Rivalry it is. And yet its probably one of the top five rivalries in FBS Football, because you are talking about two of the top five programs in FBS Football in the last thirty years. Because of the amount of games both programs have won in this time period and the amount of National Championships they've both won. They've combine to win eight National Championships, six for the Miami Hurricanes and two for the Tallahassee Seminoles. There was a stretch in the 1980s and 90s, that every time these teams played each other, they were both in the top 5-10 in the country in ranking, generally in the top five. Miami probably cost Tallahassee at least three shots at the National Championships alone in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Because they beat the Seminoles like four out of five times in this time period, with the Seminoles only winning in 1989. Before 1993 when they won their first National Championship and the reason why the Hurricanes were able to deny the Seminoles all of these shots at the National Championship. Because of how highly ranked both programs were when they play and they were both considered the two best teams in the country at the time.
For a rivalry to be great, both teams have to be at least very good if not great, the games have to mean something. That alone makes the Hurricanes-Seminoles Rivalry so great, because for a stretch in the 1980s and 90s, again they were playing for a shot at the National Championship in January. Because back then you almost had to be undefeated to have a shot to play for the National Championship and if you lose this game, you obviously have at least one lost on the record. But its more about championships, its also about bragging rights, because you are talking about at least for a while, the two best FBS Programs in Florida in a State thats rich in football talent and winner of this game can say you should play here, because we just beat them and we are the best. And another thing that makes this rivalry so great, is they simply don't like each other and their games are on intense and well played as a result.
On a personal note I'm a Seminoles fan and not just because their uniforms look like the Washington Redskins uniforms of the 1960s. But I also have a lot of respect for Miami Florida and how Howard Schnellenburger and Jimmy Johnson built this program from the bottom up. Which is basically the same way that Bobby Bowden built up the Seminoles program, from the bottom up. Playing much better teams at their stadiums and recruiting in those States as well as in Florida and telling players, if you come here you can be part of building something really special and playing a big role in that.
