ABC Sports: USFL 1985: Championship Game: Oakland Invaders vs Baltimore Stars: Keith Jackson With The Call
The 1985 USFL Championship game was the final chapter in a three year story written by the USFL in how. And how not to run a pro football league, they knew how to get players and they new how to market and how pro football should be played. But they didn't know where to go as far as where to place USFL franchises and in a lot of cases putting USFL franchises in solid NFL markets. That weren't looking for another pro football franchise and the NFL history was already very strong. Like in Washington, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Detroit, Houston just to name a few. And the fact that they tried to compete with the NFL in the fall which basically bankrupted the league by 1985. Had the USFL concentrated on major markets that didn't have pro football yet, like Orlando, Jacksonville, Memphis, San Antonio, as well as going to major markets that had just. Lost an NFL franchise like Baltimore and continued to bring in the players that were good enough for the NFL. But overlooked there, like Reggie White, Kelvin Bryant, Bobby Hebert to name a few, they would probably still be in business today.
As far as this championship game, its just proved how much that the city of Baltimore and the state of Maryland. Love pro football, just losing the Colts in 1984 and then landing a USFL franchise right after that and when the USFL goes out of business. By 1986 back in the market for an NFL franchise and then landing the CFL's Baltimore Stallions in 1994 and of course two years. Later getting the Baltimore Ravens of the NFL.
